Environmental Stewardship
Ceridian is committed to delivering products and services that are environmentally responsible, while providing a healthy and safe work environment for our employees.
The objective of our environmental stewardship initiative is to be a leading business advocate of preserving the well-being of our environment – locally, nationally, and globally – for the enjoyment of future generations. We recognize the importance of operating in an environmentally ethical and trustworthy manner. We also recognize that our operations have an environmental impact that should be minimized through responsible business practices. We are committed to working with our employees, suppliers, and customers to deliver on our commitment to environmentally-friendly practices.
Ceridian Canada will:
- comply with environmental legislation, regulations and guidelines that apply to its facilities and operations;
- promote efficient use of materials and resources throughout our facilities including water, electricity, raw materials, and other resources, particularly those that are non-renewable;
- reduce waste through reduce, re-use and recycle initiatives;
- provide and maintain safe and healthy working conditions; and,
- ensure employees, as necessary, are trained, educated and informed about environmental issues that may affect their work.
Here are some of the ways we have minimized our environmental footprint since the inception of our Environmental Stewardship Program:
Ceridian Canada’s Green Guardians
In 2008, Ceridian launched a grassroots-level Green Guardian program, an environmental stewardship initiative that relies on one volunteer coordinator in each of Ceridian’s locations to lead the organization’s “going green” efforts. To date, the Green Guardians have worked diligently to identify simple, but effective improvements within their locations to help reduce our environmental footprint. From purchasing re-usable plates and cups that eliminate the need for disposables, to installing compost bins where possible, and sharing practical tips in every issue of our employee e-newsletter, this team has played an important role in furthering the company’s green efforts.
Online Quarterly Customer Satisfaction Surveys
Until 2007, Ceridian Canada mailed approximately 10,000 paper surveys totaling more than 40,000 pages per year plus an equal number of envelopes and return envelopes to our customers. We have redefined the survey process, opting to implement the Net Promoter Survey, which relies on email and telephone contact to measure customer satisfaction. This has resulted in significant savings of paper, ink and other resources.
Customer and Employee Communications
Ceridian Canada chooses not to produce paper versions of customer or employee newsletters, opting instead for e-communications. This has reduced our usage of paper, ink and envelopes for mailing, while increasing speed of delivery.
Paperless Payroll
Ceridian offers customers the option to receive payroll reports in an electronic format, including CD-ROM for some of our larger corporate clients. In 2011, Ceridian Canada launched a special conversion campaign, encouraging our Powerpay Web payroll customers receiving paper payroll reports to “go paperless.” In addition to providing a special rebate on associated conversion fees, Ceridian Canada pledged to donate $5 to the Earth Day Canada on behalf of every client who made the switch before July 1, 2011. This campaign resulted in 1,100+ customers adopting our paperless service, and a donation of more than $5,700 to Earth Day Canada.
We also offer employee pay statements and tax forms in an online format, and encourage employers to select these options instead of paper versions. We currently process 250,000 transactions annually through Canada Post’s secure, reliable ePost service, which eliminates the use of paper. This has resulted in a tremendous savings on paper, ink, power, postage and handling.
Amended Printer Settings
In 2009, Ceridian Canada’s IT team reconfigured all network printers to eliminate a wasteful ‘banner page’ or cover sheet that was automatically generated with each print job. They also set the default output for all print jobs to double-sided. This simple change has had a tremendous impact on the amount of paper we consume, in addition to contributing to significant cost-savings for the company. For example, the Green Guardian in our Montreal location reported an annual reduction in printer paper consumption from 2,200 boxes of paper to 400 since the implementation of this environmental initiative – and that is just for one of our locations alone!
Biodegradable Bags for Payroll Packages
Ceridian Canada distributes more than 1.5 million payroll packages to our customers each year. In previous years, packages were sealed in recyclable polybags. However, in 2009, Ceridian joined efforts with our print and delivery partner Symcor to identify a more sustainable, eco-friendly means of packaging. The solution: biodegradable polybags, certified by EPI Environmental Technologies Inc., which decompose in harmony with the environment by converting into water, carbon dioxide and biomass within 18 months once placed in a landfill.
Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions through a Telecommuter Program
Ceridian Canada supports an extensive Virtual Work Program, which currently comprises more than 300 employees. In a recent survey, we invited these virtual employees to participate in an evaluation of the impact of their role on the environment, using a web-based CO2 calculator. The results from the survey, to which 143 employees responded, were astounding:
Collectively, these 143 employees are not:
- Putting 2,634,673 kilometres, per year, on their vehicles (average of 18,424 kilometres, per year)
- Commuting 11,579 kilometres per day (average round-trip commute is 81 kilometres)
The combined effects of all that driving would have generated:
- 728.5 tonnes of CO2 emissions, per year
- Equivalent of 5.1 tonnes of CO2, on average, per vehicle
Collaborating with our Customers, Suppliers & Partners to Identify “Green” Solutions
Ceridian works closely with our customers, suppliers and partners to identify ways to help reduce our environmental impact. Examples include:
- encouraging customers to opt for our self-sealers instead of unsealed documents which require envelopes, and to adopt our online reporting solutions;
- ensuring the products from our print suppliers are environmentally sound;
- regularly reviewing our energy management requirements; and,
- distributing biodegradable bags for payroll pouches.
Responsible Management of Discarded Computer Equipment
Ceridian Canada supports safe methods of dismantling/recycling/disposing old computers and electronic gear through partnership programs with our suppliers such as Dell.
NQI Progressive Excellence Program Level 3 Certification
In 2011, Ceridian earned the prestigious National Quality Institute (NQI) Progressive Excellence Program (PEP) Level 3 Certification in Organizational Quality and Healthy Workplace. The company achieved a Silver Certificate in the associated Canada Awards of Excellence. The rigorous criteria for attaining this certification include many aspects of environmental practices and sustainability.
